World number one Sun Yingsha needed seven games to see off compatriot Kuai Man in the women’s singles final at the WTT United States Smash yesterday, winning 11-9, 11-6, 9-11, 11-5, 7-11, 10-12, 11-4 in Ontario, California.
Sun raced into a two game lead before Kuai clawed one back, then forced a decider after another twist in the sixth. The world number one recovered in the seventh to take the title, her second Grand Smash of the season and sixth overall.
Both finalists had to grind through tough draws all week to get there. Sun beat Wang Yidi in the semifinals, while Kuai overturned deficits against two Japanese opponents in the quarters and semis, saving three championship points along the way before finally falling short in the final.

Kuai still leaves Los Angeles with silverware. Earlier on Sunday, she paired with Wang Manyu to beat Japan’s Hina Hayata and Miwa Harimoto in the women’s doubles final, leaving her with a title and a runner up finish from the same tournament
In the men’s draw, sixth seed Sora Matsushima of Japan claimed his first Grand Smash trophy, beating Russia’s Vladimir Sidorenko after Sidorenko had upset third seed Truls Moregard to reach his first ever Grand Smash final.
China finished the tournament with the women’s singles and doubles titles, along with both spots in the men’s doubles final.
