Tesla is currently launching a significant safety campaign in China, with a Tesla vehicle recall affecting nearly 3 million electric vehicles.
This substantial operation was formally disclosed by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) this past Friday, serving as a critical component of a broader industry-wide initiative that covers more than 4.27 million vehicles across nine separate manufacturers. The Global Times reports that Tesla models account for nearly 70 percent of that total volume.
Understanding the Tesla vehicle recall
The primary concerns driving this Tesla vehicle recall centre on interior emergency mechanical pull handles. The issue arises because these handles share a similar colour with the surrounding cabin trim, potentially creating difficulties for occupants to spot or operate them during emergencies. In severe crash scenarios where a vehicle’s low-voltage electrical system might fail, passengers could face significant hurdles attempting to unlatch the doors, while external rescuers may simultaneously struggle to access those inside the vehicle.
A customer-service representative indicated that the remedy will commence in late September. Tesla will affix warning labels to the interior door handles free of charge and implement updates to the window-control logic. This change will allow windows to automatically lower following severe collisions, thereby improving escape and rescue conditions for passengers. This specific portion of the Tesla vehicle recall applies to various domestically-built Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, alongside a smaller number of imported units, including the Model S and Model X.

Beyond the door handle modifications, the regulatory statement also highlighted flaws within the assisted-driving systems of 2,740,642 domestically-produced cars. The system currently fails to trigger necessary alerts if a driver’s gaze drifts from the road while steering-assist functions are active.
To rectify this, Tesla will provide free over-the-air software updates to enhance in-cabin camera monitoring. These adjustments will ensure the system issues reminders for drivers to remain attentive, responsible for vehicle control, and observant of traffic rules while using assisted-driving features. Most owners will be able to finalise these updates remotely without needing to visit a Tesla service centre.
