The presence of Chinese automotive technology in Europe has reached a new milestone as BYD electric vehicles in Portugal secured the top spot in the fully electric passenger car market during August.
Figures released by the Portuguese automobile association, ACAP, confirm that the Chinese manufacturer outperformed all other brands during the month, marking a significant shift in consumer preference.
Growth trajectory for BYD electric vehicles in Portugal
The data reveals that BYD registered 384 fully electric passenger cars throughout August, representing a 39.1 percent increase compared to the same month in the previous year. This performance granted the automaker a 12.49 percent market share within the fully electric passenger vehicle segment for the month alone, according to a media report.
This success is part of a broader upward trend observed throughout the year, the report said. Between January and August, BYD registered 2,913 fully electric passenger cars, a substantial 93.7 percent rise compared to the same period in 2024. While the brand currently holds third place in the year-to-date rankings – trailing behind Tesla and BMW – it has demonstrated the most vigorous growth among the top three leaders.

Market dynamics show Tesla maintaining its overall lead for the first eight months, with 4,605 registrations, despite experiencing a 25.7 percent decline compared to the previous year. BMW follows in second place with 2,977 units, reflecting a 17.2 percent year-on-year increase. In August specifically, BMW claimed second place with 343 registrations, while Tesla recorded 233, allowing BYD to capture the market lead.
The total volume of new fully electric passenger car registrations in Portugal reached 3,074 units in August. Looking at the wider market context, a total of 31,723 new fully electric passenger cars were registered between January and August, a 26.8 percent increase on the prior year. These figures underscore the accelerating adoption of electric mobility across the nation, with BYD electric vehicles in Portugal emerging as a critical driver of this ongoing transition.
