From G Bear to Guerlain: 5 very different mooncakes under one roof at Sands China

Mid-Autumn falls on 25 September this year, and Sands China’s gift boxes couldn’t be more varied – a bear-shaped truffle mooncake, a red telephone box and a Guerlain collaboration among them. Here are five to look out for across the integrated resorts

Mid-Autumn is the night the moon is at its roundest and brightest – and, after Lunar New Year, the biggest family occasion in the Chinese calendar. The full moon stands for reunion, so families gather beneath it, and mooncakes change hands everywhere – between relatives, friends, colleagues and clients – as much a token of goodwill as a festive treat.

That is why, come September, every brand – in Macao, Hong Kong and further afield – wants its mooncake to be the one people remember. This year, Sands China has taken that ambition in five directions at once. Across its Cotai properties, the group’s Mid-Autumn line-up runs from a cartoon bear with a black truffle filling to a Michelin-starred collaboration with the Parisian perfume house Guerlain – with a British telephone box, a gilded paper-cut moonscape and a leather chest of drawers in between.

Here they are, from the playful to the hard to get. The moon over Cotai on 25 September will look the same from every terrace. The boxes underneath it will not.

The G Bear mooncake

The Londoner Macao’s resident mascot has his own mooncake this season: a golden pastry moulded as G Bear’s face, in four flavours that make a creative departure from tradition – black truffle, earl grey, coffee and black sesame. The deep-blue box has a Tic-Tac-Toe game built in: its tray doubles as a noughts and crosses board, played with gold charms shaped like G Bear’s head and a crescent moon – so the box keeps the table entertained long after the pastries are gone.

The catch is that the box can’t simply be bought. Until 25 September, Sands Lifestyle Paiza, Elite and Prestige members who spend 15,000 patacas or more in a single transaction at dining or retail outlets across Sands Resorts Macao – and upload the same-day receipt through the Sands Lifestyle app – can redeem one limited-edition box, first come, first served, while stocks last. The cheeriest box of the season turns out to be one of the harder ones to earn.

For the anglophile on your list, Churchill’s Table has packed four golden lotus seed paste mooncakes with double yolks into a miniature red London telephone box (598 patacas) – a nod to the booths that stand outside The Londoner Macao itself. It is the sort of box that outlives its contents, and at the mid-range of the line-up it does the most work per pataca as a gift.

It is on sale until 25 September at Churchill’s Table Boutique and other Sands China restaurants at The Londoner, including G Bear Café and Churchill’s Table, with extra privileges for members and Sands Lifestyle Credit Card holders.

The ‘Eternal Moon’ gift boxes

The traditionalist’s pick. The red carry-box opens onto a gilded paper-cut scene – a full moon over the skyline with rabbits mid-hop beneath it, the moon’s resident animal making its seasonal appearance. It comes in two editions at 468 patacas each and you can choose from two flavour combinations that cover both ends of the family table.

The regular version – sure to appeal to traditionally minded members – holds lava custard, assorted nuts, and red bean paste with mandarin peel. The selected-flavours offering – for the young and young at heart – swaps in lava egg custard, lychee rose tea custard, and chocolate custard with sea salt, with two pieces of each flavour per box.

Collection for VVIP

For VVIP members, the mooncakes arrive as part of a hamper: a deep-green chest of three leather-handled drawers, built more like luggage than packaging. It comes in two versions – in one, the drawers hold a selection of dried seafood delicacies alongside the mooncakes, including fish maw, sea cucumber and dried scallops; in the other, Pu’er tea leaves.

The Guerlain x Sands Lifestyle box

The rarest of the five, and the only one with a perfume house attached. There are only a limited number of boxes available, which have been offered to Sands Lifestyle Paiza members and selected Elite members from 12 to 25 September, first come, first served.

Inside are four double yolk lotus seed paste mooncakes made by chef Anthony Ho of Zi Yat Heen, the Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant at Four Seasons Hotel Macao, each infused with Cammells Manuka honey UMF5+ from New Zealand. Alongside them sit a Guerlain Aqua Allegoria hand cream (50 ml, valued at 480 patacas), a voucher for a Guerlain facial treatment (valued at 1,800 patacas, redeemable at designated locations in Macao and Hong Kong) and a magnetic pin of Guerlain’s bee emblem – the house’s marker of its commitment to conservation, echoed in the honey at the heart of the mooncakes.

It is a gift designed never to reach a shop shelf, which is rather the point.

And afterwards, tea

Mooncake is rich by design – lotus seed paste, salted yolk, molten custard – and the Chinese answer to richness has always been a good pot of tea. So if the boxes above prove a little too moreish, three Sands China restaurants will see you right, one at each Cotai property.

At The Huaiyang Garden, the two-Michelin-starred Huaiyang room at The Londoner Macao, the tea master wheels the trolley to your table and brews in front of you – nearer a performance than a service. At Jiang Nan by Jereme Leung at The Venetian Macao, the tea master pours and then plays: the guzheng comes with the pot. And at La Chine, set inside The Parisian Macao’s Eiffel Tower, the tea arrives with the view – a full moon over Cotai, from halfway up a Parisian landmark.

One moon, five boxes – and, should dividing the last mooncake turn competitive, a noughts and crosses set to settle it.
