In the latest Asian Games news, Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey won two golds in the pool, China’s swimmers broke multiple records across two days, and Macao’s medal tally grew to four.
Hong Kong: Haughey wins two golds as the delegation’s tally grows
Haughey won the women’s 200m freestyle on 21 September in 1:54.96, her first gold of the Games, part of a six-medal day for Hong Kong that also included Lydia Sham’s wushu gold, Ian Ho’s silver in the men’s 50m freestyle, a triathlon mixed relay bronze, and karate bronzes for Wong Cheuk-lee and Howard Hung.
The following day, Haughey defended her women’s 100m freestyle title in 52.45 seconds, her second gold and third medal overall, after already taking silver in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay on 20 September. Teammate Lee Sum-yiu tied for seventh place in the same 100m freestyle final.

In fencing, Ryan Choi Chun-yin beat South Korea’s Yoon Jung-hyun 15-13 to reach the men’s foil final, guaranteeing Hong Kong a medal, before falling to Japan’s Kazuki Iimura in the final for silver. Fellow Hong Kong fencer Edgar Cheung exited the competition early.
China: A record-breaking run in the pool across two days
China’s swimmers broke several records over 21 and 22 September. Thirteen-year-old Yu Zidi won the women’s 200m individual medley on 21 September, overtaking defending champion Yu Yiting in the final 50 metres to win by nearly two seconds in 2:06.10, an Asian record. The same day, China’s men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team overturned a deficit on the anchor leg to beat Japan and reclaim a title it hadn’t held in 16 years, also breaking the Asian record.

On 22 September, Peng Xuwei defended her women’s 200m backstroke title in 2:05.77, breaking a 16-year-old Asian record, with Sun Mingxia taking silver. Zhang Zhanshuo won the men’s 1500m freestyle for his second individual gold of the Games, while Li Bingjie defended her women’s 400m freestyle title for her third individual gold. China’s men’s team of Xu Jiayu, Dong Zhihao, Xu Fang and Pan Zhanle won the 4x100m medley relay in 3:27.89, beating Japan’s national-record silver by 0.81 seconds. It was China’s fourth consecutive title in the event, and Xu’s individual medal tally now stands at 14 career Asian Games golds, the most by any swimmer in the event’s history.
Macao: Swimming records broken, medal tally reaches four
Wong Un Ieng broke Macao’s record in the women’s 200m backstroke, finishing in 2:20.19, while the men’s 4x100m medley relay team of Chan Hou Wa, Chao Man Hou, Lam Chi Chong and Ng Chi Hin set a new Macao record of 3:47.89 on 22 September. Neither swim was fast enough to advance, but both mark new territory records.
The results came a day after karate’s Fong Man Hou won silver in men’s individual kata, adding to Sou Cho-man’s changquan silver from the wushu events, bringing Macao’s overall tally to one gold and three silver medals through 22 September.
