Macao’s hotels ran close to full in August, with the average occupancy rate reaching 93.9 percent, up 0.8 percentage points from a year earlier, according to the Statistics and Census Service (known by the Portuguese initials DSEC).
The gains were not even across hotel grades. Four-star hotels saw the sharpest rise, up 5.4 percentage points to 94.4 percent, and three-star hotels climbed 1.2 points to 91.1 percent. Five-star hotels, still the fullest category at 95.1 percent, dipped slightly, down 0.5 points on the year.
The occupancy gain came as the total number of hotel guests fell. DSEC counted 1.27 million guests in August, down 2.6 percent year-on-year. Mainland Chinese guests slipped 1.3 percent to 978,000, and Hong Kong guests dropped 11 percent to 136,000. International guests eased 2.9 percent to 86,000, though the picture varied by market: South Korean guests fell 3.6 percent to 27,000, while American guests jumped 31.5 percent to 5,000.

Package tours moved in the opposite direction. Inbound package tourists rose 14.4 percent to 178,000, driven by a 25 percent jump in mainland Chinese tour visitors to 164,000.
For the first eight months of 2026, the average occupancy rate stands at 91 percent, up 1.1 percentage points on the same period last year, even as total guest numbers for the year to date have fallen 1.6 percent to 9.64 million. International guests for the year to date are the bright spot, up 10.4 percent to 838,000, while package tour visitors over the same period are down 8.2 percent to 1.17 million.
