Twenty-one companies from China’s Greater Bay Area (GBA) have made it onto the 2026 Fortune Global 500 list – a ranking of the world’s largest companies based on their 2025 revenue.
Published by Fortune magazine yesterday, the list features eight Shenzhen-based companies. They included the highest-ranking GBA firm, Ping An Insurance, which earned 48th place, with a revenue of US$158.65 billion.
Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reports that Ping An Insurance’s appearance on the 2026 Fortune Global 500 marks the 17th consecutive year it has been featured on the list. Notably, the enterprise was ranked 10th among international financial companies.
Other Shenzhen firms on the list included Huawei (81), BYD (91), Tencent (97), China Merchants Bank (221), S.F. Holding (372), Shenzhen Investment Holdings (421) and China Electronics (451).
BYD was one of ten Chinese companies specialising in cars and car components featured on the list and posted a revenue of US$111.85 billion.
Other GBA cities that performed strongly included Guangzhou, which had six firms on the ranking, and Hong Kong, which had five listings.
Among the Guangzhou firms listed were China Southern Power Grid (86), Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group (299), Guangzhou Industrial Investment Holdings (389), Guangdong Guangxin Holdings Group (406), Guangzhou Municipal Construction Group (430) and Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Holdings (467).

Foshan’s Midea Group (231) and Dongguan’s Luxshare Precision Industry (337) made up the remaining GBA firms on the 2026 ranking.
Overall, the GBA was represented by various sectors on the list, including financial services companies, motor vehicles and parts manufacturers, electrical equipment firms and insurers in dominant positions.
When compared to the 2025 list, the region was down by two companies this year, with Shenzhen’s Vanke and Foshan’s Country Garden Holdings failing to earn a spot.
Nationwide, China had a total of 122 companies on the 2026 Fortune Global 500, a drop of eight companies year-on-year and the lowest total recorded since 2018. Despite this, the country was ranked second place overall, behind the US, which topped the ranking with 141 companies, up by three firms year-on-year.
The US also dominated the top 10 list, with Amazon and Walmart ranked first and second place globally. Meanwhile, China had two companies in the top ten, including State Grid and China National Petroleum, which were in third and 10th place respectively.
In a foreword to August/September issue of Fortune, editor-in-chief Alyson Shontell said, “Across global business, we see again and again that the leaders who are winning are those who embrace change.” She pointed to the example of Amazon, praising it for its ability to “continually [reinvent] itself across new businesses and bold bets.”
