Donald Trump arrived in Beijing last night at the start of a multi‑day visit that will see him meet Chinese President Xi Jinping for talks both sides have billed as an effort to stabilise ties between the world’s two largest economies.

The US president’s plane landed at the capital’s main international airport shortly after nightfall, where he was greeted by senior Chinese officials before being driven to his hotel under tight security. The arrival was covered in multiple media reports.

Chinese and US flags lined parts of the route into the city, with police cordoning off nearby streets as the motorcade passed. Official coverage in both countries so far has focused on protocol and the broad aim of “managing differences” while expanding areas of cooperation, with detailed agendas to be set out when the formal meetings begin.

Trump and Xi are expected to hold a first round of talks later today, followed by a larger session including senior ministers and advisers from both governments. While officials have not released a detailed schedule, issues likely to feature in the coming days include trade and technology frictions, security tensions in the Asia‑Pacific, and the handling of ongoing crises in the Middle East.

No major announcements were made on arrival, and both governments have signalled they want to keep expectations calibrated, framing the visit as part of a broader process of high‑level contact rather than a one‑off breakthrough moment.

According to pre‑summit briefings, detailed outcomes – including any possible joint statement – are only expected after Trump and Xi hold their first round of closed‑door talks on Thursday and a follow‑up session the next day.
