Hong Kong to open 2027 SVNS World Championship

Hong Kong will host the opening leg of the 2027 HSBC SVNS World Championship at Kai Tak Sports Park from 9 to 11 April, World Rugby confirmed on 28 July, extending the city’s role as a fixture on the sevens circuit.

The tournament then moves to Valladolid, Spain, from 21 to 23 May, before wrapping up in Bordeaux, France, from 28 to 30 May.

The 2027 SVNS World Championship follows a six leg regular season, starting in Dubai on 28 and 29 November and running through Cape Town, Singapore, Perth and Vancouver before closing in New York on 13 and 14 March.

Only the top eight men’s and women’s teams from that series advance to the three-stop championship.

Hong Kong’s return comes off the back of a record-breaking edition earlier this year. The city drew a single day attendance record of 41,457 fans and a total crowd of 113,395 across the event at Kai Tak.

That contributed to a season wide total of more than 530,000 fans across the series, up 21 percent from 2025. South Africa’s men beat Argentina in the final in Hong Kong, while Australia’s women and South Africa’s men went on to be crowned overall SVNS World Championship winners for the season.

World Rugby Sevens Series general manager Sam Pinder said the record attendance in Hong Kong reflects the growing reach of the sport, and that the 2027 season carries extra weight as teams begin competing for qualification to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
