A week well spent at FRITES Grand Lisboa Palace

FRITES Belgium on Tap keeps the unhurried pace of a neighbourhood brasserie. Stained-glass detailing and a six-metre-high ceiling lend the room its character, and the format is straightforward: frites carried out fresh from the kitchen, Belgian beer poured steadily at the bar. Located at the south entrance of Grand Lisboa Palace, the restaurant marks FRITES’ first venture beyond its home market of Hong Kong, bringing the spirit of Belgian dining culture to Macao.

As the week unfolds, the atmosphere shifts. Live music fills the restaurant from Tuesday to Saturday, with resident vocalist Mihi Matshingana taking the stage. Performances begin at 7:30 pm from Tuesday to Thursday, and at 8:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. A daily happy hour runs from midday until 8 pm.

The menu follows the rhythm of the week, from Mussels Madness Monday with unlimited South Australian mussels served five ways to Surf & Turf Tuesday and Wild Wagyu Wednesday, featuring the Surf & Turf Wagyu Burger. Thursday’s Ladies’ Night rounds things off with a set menu and free-flow drinks.

Friday is when the room fills out. For nine weekends only, from 3 July to 29 August, Matshingana fronts the expanded FRITES Big Band, with saxophone, trumpet and trombone bringing a fuller sound to the Art Deco dining room from 8:30 pm, no cover charge. 

Funky Fridays lean into brass, upbeat funk and crowd-pleasing classics, while Soulful Saturdays ease into jazz, soul and blues-inflected vocals. As dinner gives way to drinks and drinks to another encore, the restaurant becomes the kind of place guests are inclined to linger.

The weekend closes more gently, with a Grand Brunch on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from MOP 388 per person. With a different draw each day, there is usually a reason to come back.
