Global investors and startups should look to the Greater Bay Area for its combination of financial strength and innovation capacity, Hong Kong’s Financial Secretary Paul Chan said yesterday at the opening of the inaugural Co-Development and Investment Conference.

What did Paul Chan say?

Chan told the roughly 300 investors and 500-plus startups gathered that nowhere combines finance and innovation more strongly than the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. He said global investors today need both stability and attractive returns, while innovators need more than capital: they need an industrial ecosystem, a steady talent supply, and access to a full range of innovation resources.

He pointed to Hong Kong’s own numbers as evidence: the technology sector’s share of turnover on the Hong Kong stock exchange has climbed from 15 percent to 47 percent over the past decade, with overall exchange turnover growing more than eightfold in the same period.

Where is the event happening?

The six-day conference, organised by Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, opened at Hong Kong Science Park, covering topics including global deep tech investment trends and strategies for tech companies expanding overseas. It then moves to Dongguan and Hangzhou for its final four days, where participants will visit local innovation incubators and pilot production bases.
