Morpheus becomes Macao’s first Three Michelin Keys hotel

The Morpheus hotel at the City of Dreams has become the first and only Three Michelin Keys hotel in Macao, earning the top distinction in the 2026 Michelin Keys ratings – the hotel industry equivalent of the Michelin brand’s highly-coveted restaurant star rating system. 

Morpheus’s win was announced by the Michelin Guide on 18 September 2026, with the luxury property among only 155 hotels worldwide to earn the title. Its Three Key rating in the 2026 edition marks an upgrade from the previous year’s Two Key honour. 

According to the Michelin Guide, Three Michelin Keys represents “an extraordinary stay,” while the second and first tiers denote “an exceptional” and “a very special” stay respectively.

Why was Morpheus selected as Macao’s first Three Michelin Keys hotel?

The Michelin Guide highlighted Morpheus’s futuristic architecture – designed by the late Dame Zaha Hadid – as its “defining feature,” noting that the look was inspired by traditional Chinese jade carving.

“From its panoramic glass elevators to its guestrooms and public spaces, the hotel expresses a strong and consistent design identity,” the guide wrote. In addition, Morpheus was lauded for its use of technology in guest rooms, as well as dining options such as the Two-Michelin-Starred restaurant, Alain Ducasse at Morpheus, and the contemporary Chinese establishment Yi.

Which other Macao hotels were featured in the 2026 awards?

Morpheus was one of nine Macao-based hotels to be awarded with Michelin Keys in 2026. The guide handed Two-Keys to Grand Lisboa Palace, Palazzo Versace, the Karl Lagerfeld and Banyan Tree. Notably, the latter saw its rating upgrade from the previous year’s One Key.

Macao properties with a One-Key rating included Four Seasons Hotel, the Londoner Hotel, the Ritz-Carlton and the St. Regis.

How many Michelin Key hotels does Hong Kong have? 

Macao’s neighbouring SAR of Hong Kong had 10 establishments in the 2026 Michelin Keys. Only Rosewood Hong Kong managed to earn a Three Michelin Keys rating, with the guide underlining the 65-floor hotel’s “spacious rooms and suites overlooking Victoria Harbour,” cooperation with local institutions to localise the experience and strong F&B offerings. 

Four Hong Kong properties were designated as Two-Key Hotels, including Upper House, the Peninsula, Four Seasons Hotel, which was upgraded from One Key, and the Mandarin Oriental at the Landmark, which received the honour for the first time.

Meanwhile, the guide awarded five hotels with One Key, including the Mandarin Oriental, the St. Regis, Hotel Icon, the Ritz-Carlton and the Murray.

How many Asian and Middle Eastern hotels were named in this year’s awards?

In total, 600 Michelin Key hotels from Asia and the Middle East were featured in the 2026 list, including 173 new properties and promotions, as well as 34 establishments with Three-Key distinctions. 

Mongolia, Myanmar, Armenia and Kazakhstan were four destinations that were included in the ranking system for the first time.

“With 470 newly distinguished establishments [in 2026], we are witnessing a continuous upscaling of the offering, driven by even more creative and ambitious projects,” Gwendal Poullennec, the international director of the Michelin Guide, said.

Overall, 2,832 Michelin Key hotels were listed this year, of which 657 were Two Michelin Keys and 2,020 were One Michelin Key.

How are Michelin Key hotels determined?

The Michelin Key ratings are decided by Michelin Guide inspectors who carry out anonymous visits to the hotel and assess the hotel experience independently. 

Inaugurated in 2024, the Michelin Key ratings initially spanned 15 destinations in North America, Europe and Asia, with coverage now extending to 79 locations.
