Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken out following a high-profile dispute with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus that saw him abruptly walk out of the national team camp.
According to Reuters, the controversy unfolded in Copenhagen ahead of a Nations League fixture against Denmark, stemming from disagreements regarding playing time and squad management. Ronaldo said an initial agreement had been struck for him to sit out matches against Norway and Denmark to properly manage his physical fitness.
However, tension escalated on the day of the Norway fixture when the coach informed Ronaldo that he would feature for 30 minutes. After warming up from halftime without being deployed on the pitch, Ronaldo registered his dissatisfaction. A subsequent meeting attended by Simao Coutinho, the sporting director of his club side Al Nassr, seemingly resolved the issue with an eight-point document outlining that the warmup incident was a mistake, Reuters said.
Despite expectations that the coach would clarify these events publicly, Ronaldo alleged that subsequent remarks bore no resemblance to their private discussion. Consequently, Ronaldo chose to leave the training camp in Copenhagen. Following the team’s victory over Norway, Jesus denied any formal agreement existed while leaving the door open for a future comeback, Reuters says. The Portuguese Football Federation has yet to issue a formal statement.

Addressing his departure, Ronaldo offered an apology to supporters for failing to acknowledge fans after the match and to his teammates for leaving the squad prematurely, acknowledging that his role as captain made his actions more significant.
Accepting that the consequences of his actions must be evaluated and penalised by the Portuguese Football Federation, Ronaldo nevertheless insisted his career is far from over. Dismissing the notion of a quiet farewell, Ronaldo confirmed that upon serving any mandated suspension, he remains fully available to compete for the national team as long as he maintains his physical fitness.
