Hong Kong has once again been named the freest economy in the world according to the Economic Freedom of the World 2026 Annual Report published by the Fraser Institute, a prominent Canadian think tank.

Out of the five core assessment areas evaluated in the report, the city secured first place for its freedom to trade internationally and captured second place in regulatory standards.

The Hong Kong government welcomed the findings, noting that the publication reaffirms the city’s robust standing as a free-market economy supported by a fair, open, and efficient business ecosystem.

Freest economy: Hong Kong increasingly competitive

Despite global economic uncertainties and rising trade protectionism, local authorities emphasised that the territory remains firmly dedicated to upholding its free port status, zero-tariff policies, and straightforward low-tax structure.

Furthermore, officials highlighted that China’s own economic development and technological innovation acted as driving forces economic growth and said that Hong Kong benefitted from robust national backing while retaining deep global connections.

According to the local government, the city has continued to climb international competitiveness rankings across education, innovation, technology, and finance.

Officials said that major infrastructural plans, such as the development of the Northern Metropolis, would stimulate further economic and social momentum, creating broader prospects for residents and global investors alike.
