Formula 1 confirms return of the Portuguese Grand Prix for 2027

The Formula 1 World Championship is set to return to Portugal in June 2027, with the Portuguese Grand Prix scheduled to take place from 18 to 20 June at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão. The event marks the return of top-tier motor racing to the country after its previous visit in 2021, when Lewis Hamilton secured victory at the track for the second consecutive year after his win in 2020.

The agreement between Formula 1 and the Portimão circuit secures the Portuguese Grand Prix for both the 2027 and 2028 seasons, according to multiple media reports. Renowned for its flowing layout and dramatic elevation changes, the Algarve facility previously hosted World Championship events during the 2020 and 2021 campaigns. The European leg of the tour will feature Portugal in June, directly following the race in Monaco.

The return of the Portuguese Grand Prix to Portimão

As part of the broader 2027 schedule, Formula 1 and the FIA have outlined a 24-race calendar spanning 22 countries across five continents. Pre-season testing will occur in Bahrain from 24 to 27 February, before the opening round in the Gulf state from 12 to 14 March, followed by Saudi Arabia. 

The championship then proceeds to Australia, Japan, China, Miami, and Canada. In Asia, Japan will host racing at Suzuka from 9 to 11 April, whilst China hosts its event at the Shanghai International Circuit from 16 to 18 April. Later in the year, the championship visits Singapore, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi.

Alongside Portugal, Türkiye also rejoins the calendar in October between Azerbaijan and Singapore. Furthermore, the format will see an expansion of Sprint weekends from six to ten. Sprints will feature for the first time in Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco, and Abu Dhabi, while Montreal, Silverstone, Monza, São Paulo, and Lusail retain the format.

According to official data, viewership for Sprint weekends has been 12 percent higher than non-Sprint events since 2021, with 82 percent of attending spectators agreeing that the format adds value. 

Stefano Domenicali, president and chief executive of Formula 1, expressed enthusiasm for welcoming back the Portuguese Grand Prix and expanding the Sprint programme to deliver higher intensity and competition for global supporters throughout the 2027 campaign.
