Skip the ballroom: The case for getting married at Vida Rica Bar, Mandarin Oriental, Macau

The chandeliers at Vida Rica Bar are two storeys of stacked chrome and crystal rings – but they still come second to the window. Past the huge, floor-to-ceiling glass sits a postcard of the city: the Macau Tower straight ahead across the water, the Nam Van lakes below, and the Chapel of Our Lady of Penha – one of Macao’s oldest churches – keeping watch from its hill. At midday the light pours in and climbs the marble columns to the mirrored ceiling; by evening the same glass turns gold, then indigo, as the city switches itself on.

People cross town for this room at sunset, for its cocktails and its homemade Italian plates. A growing number of couples have worked out something else about it: it may be the loveliest place in Macao to get married.

The case for the small wedding

Macao knows how to stage a banquet for 500 or even 1,000. The city’s ballrooms are built for it, and they do it superbly. But some couples want the other thing: a couple of dozen people they love, food chosen course by course, and an event where the staff have learned the guests’ names before the soup arrives.

At Mandarin Oriental, Macau, the second kind of day happens at Vida Rica Bar. Sitting on the waterfront between MGM and One Central, the hotel has 213 rooms and no casino – so the lobby is hushed and never crowded, there is no gaming floor between the door and the lift, and the staff have time to stop and talk. Weddings at Vida Rica Bar run on exclusive hire: there are no other functions down the corridor and no strangers photobombing the wedding pictures.

This spring, one couple signed their marriage papers there over lunch. Two long tables dressed in white ran up to that enormous window, lined with vases of orange tulips, marigolds and calla lilies. There was a printed menu at each place and 14 guests along each table. The Macau Tower stood framed in the glass behind the signing table. It was as if the legal act of getting married happened with the city itself looking on.

The kitchen wrote two menus for the day. One was a Cantonese extravaganza: Peking duck with caviar served with the welcome champagne, double-boiled sea whelk soup with fish maw and matsutake mushroom, steamed tiger grouper with spring onion, whole South African abalone with fish maw in oyster sauce, and braised Boston lobster with e-fu noodles in golden chicken broth, closing with sweetened almond cream and glutinous rice dumplings. 

The other was written entirely for one side of the family, who are vegetarian – white asparagus with black truffle, a clear soup of Yunnan mushrooms, mapo tofu made with plant-based mince, black truffle fried rice – a full menu in its own right, not a plate of substitutions.

Just as importantly, the atmosphere was intimate and the pace relaxed. In a city where a wedding can feel like a production line, the afternoon felt like being hosted in someone’s very well-appointed home.

What the Majestic Vow package includes

For couples who want the same room and the same view, the hotel has created a package. Majestic Vow 2026 covers a two-hour wedding celebration at Vida Rica Bar with a lunch buffet for 40 guests, fresh flowers for the cocktail tables, and a two-hour free flow of soft drinks, chilled orange juice and beer. There’s also a personal butler assigned to the couple for the event, a five-tier mock cake for the cutting ceremony, a bottle of house champagne for the toast, use of the in-house audio system, a bridal dressing room and self-parking for guests. 

Couples who prefer a plated menu to a buffet – like the April wedding above – can work with the events team on that, and free-flow wine and champagne packages can be added so the toasts carry on.

Macao also allows a private notary to officiate a civil marriage outside the registry, and the hotel’s team can help arrange one – which is how a couple ends up legally married in front of that window rather than in a government office.

After the vows

The room works for other kinds of celebrations too. The same format – exclusive hire, bespoke menus, a team that fusses over details – is equally suitable for milestone birthdays, anniversary dinners, vow renewals and private corporate gatherings. The bar’s own kitchen of homemade Italian favourites and its award-winning cocktail list stay on hand for guests who want something less formal than a banquet.

The room makes its own best argument in person, and there is now a date for that: from 21 to 23 August the hotel hosts a pop-up wedding salon at Vida Rica Bar, open 11 am – 5 pm daily, no booking needed.

The room will be dressed for a wedding against the Macau Tower backdrop, with canapés, cocktails and mocktails created for the event, wedding gowns from Macao bridal label The Bridestory, and make-up artists and table-décor specialists on hand. Guests take home a Mandarin Oriental tote bag with a personalised patch, and the events team will be there to talk through weddings, intimate celebrations, private events and notary services.
