Macao had a standout week across three different sports, with a swimmer setting a new event record, the karate team returning from Thailand with 18 medals, and two badminton players making history at the BWF World Championships.
Macao swimmer Choi Cheok Ioi won two golds at the 2025-26 Guangdong Youth Swimming U-Series finals, held last weekend in Zhaoqing.
Choi topped the women’s U14 50 metre and 100 metre breaststroke events, clocking 34.05 seconds in the 50 metre final to set a new meet record.

She qualified for the finals after finishing first and second in the two breaststroke events at an earlier qualifying leg, and is now using the experience to prepare for next month’s 69th Macao Swimming Championship.
Macao’s karate delegation won 4 gold, 2 silver and 12 bronze medals at the 16th Thailand Open Karate Championship in Bangkok, competing against teams from ten countries and regions including Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia and New Zealand. More than 220 athletes took part.
Macao sent 20 athletes and three coaches, treating the tournament as preparation for this year’s Asian Games.

Ho Cheok In won gold in women’s youth individual kumite, while Asian Games representative Fong Man Hou claimed individual kata gold before combining with three teammates to win team kata gold as well, beating Hong Kong’s Asian Games squad in the final.
Chu On Kei added a silver in individual kata, narrowly losing the final 2-3 to the host nation’s representative.
Ng Weng Chi and Leong Iok Chong became the first Macao badminton players to win a match at the BWF World Championships, according to TDM, beating the Netherlands’ Brian Wassink and Debora Jille in the opening round of mixed doubles.
The pair advance to the round of 32, where they face India’s Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, who received a first round bye.
