Jobey Hon: The Hong Kong artist who sold out in 72 hours

Jobey Hon paints Hong Kong at a scale that is hard to walk past: tai chi practitioners, mahjong players, taxi drivers caught mid-sentence in Cantonese. Then she carries the finished canvas back to the person in it and films them seeing themselves. Those videos made her career.

Hon ran a digital marketing agency for seven years before she picked up a brush, and has turned down gallery representation to keep control of how her work sells. Here she talks about the first painting to go viral, still in her studio. “I think we’re all artists in a way,” she says.
